Sunshine “Sunny” Crenshaw grew up in a military family, the oldest of three on one of the core planets. Her father only wanted sons but was given two daughters. Raised to know that she was resented, Sunny’s parents finally had a son; their little golden boy. Her parents fawned over him, shoving her and her little sister pretty much to the side. Trying to prove that she was just as worth of her parents’ attention, she signed up for the Alliance military. She got good marks and some praise from her father, which she reveled in. That was until her little brother joined the army as well. By this time she had gotten the rank of sergeant and the Alliance was waging war against the Independents, so she had gotten to see some action, though she was positioned mostly on the fringes of the fighting. All her letters from home talked about her little brother and how well he was doing. He graduated with top marks in everything and, much to the chagrin of Sunny, was placed in her unit. By this time, Sunny had been promoted to lieutenant and was leading the squad to one of the outer planets, her brother in tow. The unit Sunny lead was usually where people went after the academy to transition them into actual fighting. As Sunny liked to call it, “The babysitters club” because she was left babysitting the rookies until the higher ups felt they were ready for real combat. They were shot down in atmo by Reavers and that’s when the trouble began. For all his top marks, Sunny’s little brother began to freak out as their ship crash landed. Her brother went AWOL, leaving Sunny and the rest of her unit pinned down by the Reavers. He was the replacement doctor for their unit and without her brother, half of her men died at the crash site. She was left with a bunch of rookies straight out of the academy that had graduated with her brother and had probably been told stories about her because they all seemed to resent her and love him, just like her parents. Sunny never really found out what exactly happened to her brother, and by then she really didn’t care. Her men were dying and getting dragged off by Reavers. The locals were trying to fight off the Reavers too, and here on the outskirts, it wasn’t really Alliance versus Independents, it was everyone against the Reavers. Among some of the local color was a man out in the wild who killed the Reavers with ruthless efficiency. Not belonging to either side, just surviving, was Bishop. Sunny recruited him to be part of her unit, at least until they could get off the planet. Also with his help, she was able to keep herself and some of her men alive with his basic battlefield first aid. The scar over her left eye was cauterized with gun powder since he didn’t have anything else.  Being stranded on this planet marked a change in her view of the Alliance, not only as she got to see how people out here lived, but that they wouldn’t send back up or a carrier to pick them up. It is also when she began robbing outer rim planets; their banks, warehouses, anything they needed they took. They were finally able to repair her downed ship but she was still assigned to the outer rim planets where there were only skirmishes. Bishop decided to stay with Sunny because he was having fun and found a kindred spirit in her.  Some of the new members of her group were insubordinate because she was a woman (and probably from the not-so-flattering stories her brother told), and only because Bishop had her back did they not attempt a full scale mutiny. Towards the end of the war, she ran into her brother, who had been promoted, a lot, and she tried to get him court-marshaled for going AWOL, but it back fired and she was stripped of her rank and dishonorably discharged, then tried for looting and larceny. She was never convicted because her men refused to testify as they would have been implicated as well had they testified. Needless to say, her father wanted nothing to do with her so she was on her own, with nothing. Since Bishop wasn’t an official solider, just a mercenary, he followed Sunny because, in his words, “she makes things interesting.” They pulled low rank scam jobs in bars for awhile before over hearing a loose lipped courier talk about a buyer giving him some money to by a ship. Sunny got the bright idea to jump him and take his place. After all the fuss, Sunny and Bishop go away by the skin of their teeth with a ship bought and paid for totally legally. Forging the papers for the ship Aces ‘n Eights and repainting it to be the Queen of Spades, Sunny is ready for adventure and all she needs now is a crew
